Just a quick share, using our 12×12 pages to create tile magnets. There are 36 2×2 photos, or inspirational sayings per sheet. We cut, modge podged them on, and slapped on a magnet. Cool, fun and inexpensive gifts this year.

This week was my son’s first soccer party. He was recognized as someone who had two partners in crime, someone who appeared quiet but really wasn’t. His award was for goalie, as the super stopper.

As a gift to the coach, we made him a book. It was a small book, a 7×5. It had our banner. Each background had skulls, as that was the name of the team. We featured his child mostly, and the end highlighted each child.

When he opened the book, he was speechless. A man who just a few minutes earlier had a speech for each child’s strengths. He finally mustered up enough words to say, “This is incredible. I’m almost makes me cry.” He held it together, and was very touched by the gift.

What I didn’t know while making the book, is what he told me when he arrived. Last year he got an amazing camera. He loves to take photos, but when you are a coach you don’t have time to take photos. In addition, their wife was the team’s ref, so they didn’t get a single family photo of their kids playing soccer this year.

I was able to change that.

You just never know the power of story.

One of the greatest stories that we can write is the story of our parents and our grandparents. I took on that task 3 years ago. I sat with my grandmother and interviewed her. Even though I had heard all the stories many times before, I interviewed her so that when I wrote the stories they would be as accurate as possible. I also asked her for some of her favorite photos, or some photos that related to the stories she told. It was a wonderful experience.

Yes, there were photos or stories not in the book, but the most important part for me was that something, anything was documented. She was 95 at the time! We have lots of family researching genealogy, and yes it would be nice to include, but what I find is a genealogist is never done researching. As my parents, aunts and uncles also grow older, I feared the research they found would too be buried with them. So, I boldly created a book…the stories from my grandmother.
